Around Thanksgiving 2014, life for Wish Kid Nick changed forever. After becoming increasingly thirsty and feeling fatigued, doctors discovered Nick’s blood sugar levels tested 100 points above the average. He was then diagnosed with type 1 diabetes.
Nick was immediately admitted to the hospital where it took doctors five days to regulate his blood sugar levels. Treatment for Type 1 diabetes, a life-threatening illness that prevents the body from turning sugar into energy, forces sufferers to inject insulin into the body multiple times every day. Nick is fully insulin dependent and must check his blood sugar at least three times a day.
The 14-year-old tries not to let his illness get him down, even though he’s had to stop playing competitive sports. He still enjoys hanging out with his friends, watching FSU basketball, loves to read, and is an excellent student. Nick has even found a way to stay in shape without affecting his blood sugar levels; the teen has become an avid weightlifter.
KWN couldn’t wait to give Nick some joy back into his life and granted his wish for a once-in-a-lifetime shopping spree. Multiple sponsors pitched in to give Nick an experience he’d remember forever. He spent the day shopping at a local mall where he was given extra attention and goody bag after goody bag. He finished the day with an exceptional meal.
“Nick had a great time on his shopping spree,” said his mom.
“DTRL rocks!” added Nick.
KWN would like to thank each and every sponsor that helped make Nick’s dream shopping spree come true:
• American Eagle Outfitters
• Tallahassee Ale House
And as Nick is an avid Florida sports fan, FSU had invited him to attend a basketball game when the season starts!
