“Shamel got called up on stage”
In 2007, Shamel began losing weight at a drastic rate. After multiple tests and suffering from extremely high fevers, Shamel was diagnosed with lupus, an autoimmune disorder that affects many parts of body and commonly shows symptoms of extreme fatigue, painful or swollen joints, unexplained fever, skin rashes, and kidney problems.
When she was first diagnosed, Shamel missed a lot of school as a result of constant skin rashes that would flair-up without warning. These painful sores wouldn’t respond immediately to treatment and caused Shamel to undergo surgery to have them removed and treated. Doctors tested multiple rounds of medications in an attempt to curb the flair-ups.
While trying to control her lupus, doctors discovered she was also suffering from stage 4 kidney disease, which prevents her kidneys from filtering blood and keeping her healthy. Shamel was immediately started on chemotherapy in an attempt to stop further kidney damage. The treatment, in turn, caused blood clots in her body, and she spent almost three weeks in the ICU.
Shamel takes two daily shots to control her blood clots and uses a wheelchair for mobility, but the teen doesn’t let her diagnosis rule her life. She still finds joy in life and dreams of becoming a nurse to help other people. She also loves Disney; especially Winnie the Pooh.
Kids Wish Network couldn’t wait to grant Shamel’s wish and send her on a magical experience in Florida. Shamel and her family stayed at luxury accommodations, visiting all the theme parks, and enjoyed being the center of attention at all their dinners.
Shamel enjoyed SeaWorld the best and loved being called on stage at the Hard Rock Café. Planet Hollywood was also one of her favorite experiences.
KWN and Shamel would like to thank all the generous sponsors that helped maker her dream come true!
