Michael is a kind and respectful 14-year-old who was diagnosed with ulcerative colitis, an inflammatory bowel disease. He has faced multiple struggles in dealing with his illness, but consistently impressed the staff at Maricopa Integrated Health System’s Arizona Children Center.
“I met Michael during his first admission to our hospital and remember being so impressed from the beginning with his maturity, his smile, and his ability to cope with his diagnosis at such a young age,” said one of his nominators. “To come into work and find Michael’s name of your assignment sheet was a pleasure. Living with Michael’s diagnosis is a formidable task at any age, and Michael is an example to all.”
“His recent admission challenged both Michael and his family to the daunting task of making decisions that no family, let alone a bright, articulate, sweet young man of 14 should have to make,” recalls another of Michael’s nominating nurses. “While Michael has endured multiple painful procedures, his attitude and outlook remain positive. His strength and courage are admirable, if not slightly envious. As a nurse, you can’t ask for a better patient.”
Michael is definitely an inspirational young man, and KWN is proud to call him a Hero of the Month!
