“Zander was the happiest kid around”
When Zander was just 2 years old, his mom noticed he was drinking a lot of fluids, had sweet-smelling breath, and was lethargic. After taking him to the hospital, Zander was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes and admitted for six days, including two spent in the ICU. It took over a week to stabilize Zander’s blood sugar levels.
Because Zander’s blood sugar is so hard to regulate, doctors quickly switched him from insulin shots to a pump. He also received a diabetic alert dog named Si in March 2014, yet still has to check his levels at least seven times each day.
Zander tries not to let type 1 diabetes get in the way of having fun. Even though Zander had to check is blood sugar a lot and took Si along as a precaution, nothing could damper his smile on his wish trip to Disney World, Universal Studios, and LEGOland.
KWN sent Zander and his family on a magical wish trip to the Florida theme parks where he finally got to meet a Transformer, something he’s been wishing to see for years. The family was overwhelmed by the generosity of each sponsor and loved every aspect of Zander’s wish trip.
“Universal Studios was awesome; Zander was the happiest kid around,” recalls his mom. “He had so much fun at LEGOland too, and Chuck E. Cheese was perfect for the last night of our trip.”
Zander will continue to battle his life-threatening illness with a smile on his face. He also will become a big brother again very soon (March 2015).
Kids Wish Network would like to thank all the generous Guardian Angel sponsors that went above and beyond to make Zander’s wish trip memorable.
