“The wish captured what Alexis really likes”
Alexis was diagnosed before birth with sickle cell anemia, a blood disorder that causes red blood cells to take on a crescent shape and block blood flow. This can cause pain, organ damage, and increased risk of infection. Alexis was constantly in and out of hospitals as a young child and suffered multiple, severe episodes of pneumonia and upper respiratory infections.
In 2005, Alexis was started on a new medication that helped promote her red blood cells and decreased her hospital stays. But, five years later, she was diagnosed with a second life-threatening illness: type 1 diabetes.
While Alexis’s illnesses can bring her down and limit her physical activities, she continues to fight on and persevere. She has dedicated herself to music and theatrical drama and also desires to become a scientist when she’s older. Her favorite thing to do is sing, so KWN connected with the Hurrah Players for six months of lessons.
Kids Wish Network also fulfilled Alexis’s dream for a Florida vacation where she stayed a luxury accommodations, explored Universal Studios and Epcot, and took in a Blue Man Group show.
Alexis’s favorite experiences were the Blue Man Group show, visiting Universal Studios and eating dinner at Fulton’s Crab House in downtown Disney.
“Thank you for working so hard to grant Alexis’s wish,” recalls her mom. “It was great how her Wish Coordinator captured what she really liked and put it in her wish.”
KWN would like to thank all the sponsors who helped make Alexis’s dream come true:
• Westgate Resort
• Blue Man Group
• Compassion Partners Program
• Fulton’s Crab House
• Bubbalou’s Bodacious BBQ
• Carrabbas Italian Grill
• National Car Rental
Alexis graduated high school just before her wish was granted and is looking forward to starting college.
