“Olivia had a wonderful time”
Olivia was born 5 weeks early and diagnosed immediately with Down syndrome, a genetic disorder that results in varied symptoms. This disorder, however, was not what put Olivia’s life in danger. First, she was diagnosed as failure to thrive, meaning her weight gain was significantly lower than others her age, and then doctors discovered a heart murmur when she was only 3 weeks old.
Her heart murmur, caused by a hole in the vital organ, would need invasive surgery to repair, but doctors delayed it until she was older and put on more weight. Finally, when she was 3 years old, doctors performed a coil occlusion operation. The surgeons went through Olivia’s leg to reach her heart and insert a coil to close the hole. The coil acts like a cork and must be checked on an annual basis.
Olivia faces many challenges regarding Down syndrome, but doesn’t let that stand in her way. She is treated with speech and occupational therapy and follows her schedule well. She also has a weak immune system and must be extremely careful when others are ill.
The happy and sociable 13-year-old loves to be around people and horses and wants to be just like her big sister. She couldn’t wait to spend time with her family on her wish trip to Disney World.
Kids Wish Network made Olivia’s dream come true when she and her family traveled to Orlando for an eventful visit to famous theme park. Olivia loved going on rides and meeting some Disney princesses.
“Olivia had a wonderful time,” recalls her mom.
