Mercy Hospital- Des Moines, December 2013
In late 2013, 12-year-old Jessica was diagnosed with an atrial septal defect and was informed that she needed open heart surgery. She had an extremely rough time in the hospital after her surgery but had a positive attitude since day one. She was always willing to try her hardest and give anything a chance. Jessica had to return to the hospital to install a pacemaker after her initial surgery, but was brave throughout the whole harrowing ordeal. She was always smiling and eager to talk to staff that were helping her; Jessica was a trooper during her hospitalization and a great example of a HERO!
Update August 2014: Jessica is doing great! We received an update from her mom:
“This summer Jessica was lucky enough to receive sponsorship to help her go to a children’s congenital heart defect camp in California. While we were out there, we went to Yosemite National Park, and Jessica asked me to take this picture of her with her Kids Wish Network HERO t-shirt on; she absolutely cherishes it. She said that it was a pretty big deal that she was able to hike around the park like a normal kid. She’s pretty inspiring to all of us, and she really does realize how lucky she is to be doing great now.”
We’re so happy you’re doing well Jessica! And so proud to call you a Hero of the Month!
