“Serissa loved the Dole plantation”
In 2012, Serissa’s mom became concerned with her unusual tiredness and weight loss. The doctor ran blood tests, and Serissa was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. Her blood sugar levels were so high that she was in diabetic ketoacidosis, a life-threatening complication of diabetes. Serissa was immediately hospitalized and spent the next 24 hours in the ICU before she was admitted to the pediatric unit for an additional three days.
Serissa’s family plays a crucial role in keeping the sweet and outgoing girl healthy. The entire family pitches in to help Serissa remember to check her levels or administer a life-saving insulin shot. Serissa received an insulin pump in 2014 that can release the medication immediatel but she still tests her blood sugar 8-10 times per day.
Despite her complications, Serissa loves to play outside as much as her life-threatening illness allows. She also loves to collect seashells and couldn’t wait to add to her collection during her wish trip.
Kids Wish Network granted Serissa’s ultimate wish for a tropical, Hawaii vacation complete with fabulous accommodations, samples of local culture, and delicious dinners.
Serissa loved visiting the Dole plantation, watching a traditional luau, and taking a submarine ride.
