“Bobby wasn’t even scared for his first plane ride like we were; he’s really brave.”
Meeting Bobby, you probably couldn’t guess this lively and energetic young teen suffers from a painful life-threatening condition. His body may not show it on the outside, but inside is a different story. Bobby suffers from neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1), genetic disorder that affects cell division and causes tumors to arise almost anywhere in the body. Often times these tumors appear along the pathways of the nervous system and can attach to organs and blood vessels.
Doctors located Bobby’s first tumor when he was just six months old. He was taken to Duke University where the crushing diagnosis was confirmed. At age 5, Bobby had two other surgeries to remove multiple tumors and insert a metal rod in his back to combat the bone defects from his condition. Bobby’s young body continues to develop tumors throughout his system, from his brain to his feet. Doctors have discussed another operation to place a shunt in Bobby’s brain to drain excess liquid and release pressure resulting from the tumors.
These inoperable and painful tumors will continue to plague Bobby throughout his life, but Bobby got to put aside his worry and enjoy the magic behind the movies on his wish trip to Universal Studios.
The Potter family enjoyed an all-expense paid wish trip to Disney World and Universal Studios where they stayed in luxury accommodations, dined at the local eateries, and experienced all the parks had to offer. Bobby loved his first ride on an airplane and took in many 3-D attractions at Universal.
“Bobby had a blast,” recalls mom Rhonda. “Everything was marvelous. There are not enough words to describe how thankful we are.”
Bobby will continue to face a long road ahead in connection to his illness. He is constantly getting doctor check-ups to keep track of his tumors and discuss possible surgeries to alleviate his suffering.
