“I can’t believe I got to meet Derrick Rose and sit courtside at the game.”
In February of 2013, Rene went to what was supposed to be a routine doctor’s appointment. The visit changed dramatically when physicians discovered a cancerous tumor. The teen immediately began chemotherapy but after months of treatment and no response, doctor’s decided to surgically remove the tumor. But by October of that year, the cancer had metastasized and began to attack other parts of Rene’s body.
Today, Rene continues his battle against the disease as the cancer has spread to his pelvis, stomach and lungs. After another surgery, Rene adheres to an aggressive and draining schedule of chemotherapy treatments: 5 days on, 3 weeks off, repeat. The debilitating routine is an attempt to stop the disease.
One thing that has kept Rene’s spirits high as he fights this deadly diagnosis is basketball. He always tries to catch a Chicago Bulls game to see his favorite player, and hero, Derrick Rose, in action. To give Rene some continued encouragement, Kids Wish Network sent the Texas teen and to meet the source of his inspiration.
Rene and his family traveled on an all-expense paid wish trip to attend a Chicago Bulls game and meet the superstar athlete. The family enjoyed amazing accommodations, dined on authentic Chicago pizza, and spent an epic evening courtside as the Bulls dominated the Atlanta Hawks.
During his meet-and-greet with Derrick Rose, Rene was given an official “Vega” Chicago Bulls jersey, which Rose signed; then he toured the facility and watched in awe as he sat steps away from the court during the game.
“Everything was amazing,” recalls Rene. “I can’t believe I got to meet Derrick Rose and sit courtside at the game. Thank you so much for granting my wish.”
You can show Rene some support, just like Derrick Rose did, and leave him a message below. We’ll keep you updated on his condition as he continues to battle the destructive disease.
