“THIS TRIP MADE BLAKE’S WHOLE WORLD”
Blake, an imaginative and active 9 year old is known by friends and family as an ambitious thrill seeker. He embodies everything that little boys are known for; the love of exploring the outdoors, pizza and hot wheels. This brave and intelligent youngster is enthusiastic about science, hockey and his Play Station 3. If Blake isn’t found playing on his Play Station or watching a hockey game, he is most likely exploring the outdoors with a scientific approach. He can also be found rocking out to Green Day or hanging out with his cat, Smokey.
At 19 months of age, Blake began suffering from type 1 diabetes.
Although doctors were able to get his diabetes under control, Blake continued to be sick and was continually in and out of the hospital experiencing persistent headaches and relentless stomach aches. After a battery of tests and biopsies doctors finally diagnosed him with Gastro paresis, and mitochondrial disease. Gastro paresis is a medical condition consisting of a paresis (partial paralysis) of the stomach, resulting in food remaining in the stomach for a longer time than normal and mitochondrial is a group of disorders caused by dysfunctional mitochondria, the organelles that generate energy for the cell which results in poor growth, loss of muscle coordination, muscle weakness, visual problems, hearing problems, heart disease, liver disease, kidney disease, gastrointestinal disorders and respiratory disorders. Due to all of the strain on Blake’s body, he was malnourished and had a feeding tube installed, he has since then been able to put on 20 pounds. Blake is in stable condition as of now, but continues to struggle daily to control his diabetes.
For his wish, Kids Wish Network arranged an all expenses paid trip to Disneyland for Blake and his family including tickets for Disneyland and Disney’s California Adventure Park, as well as accommodations at the Embassy Suites Anaheim North and dinner each evening. Blake had a blast on the rollercoasters at the adventure park, especially on the Buzz Lightyear and Radiator Springs rides.
“I can’t believe I got to have this experience! Space Mountain was so cool. I’ll never forget meeting Mater from Cars.” said Blake.
“Blake was so overjoyed. I want to thank Kids Wish Network for making Blake’s whole world, this means more to me than words can describe.” said Brandy, Blake’s mother.
Since his wish trip, Blake has been doing very well. He has gained a good amount of weight and is getting all the nutrients his body needs. With his healthy weight came a healthy heart rate and healthy blood pressure level. Blake was also able to complete an entire year on school campus instead of home and hospital schooling. He turns 11 this year, and while he continuous to face challenges with his health, he is looking forward to another full year at school. His mom let us know that Blake still wears his Kids Wish Network shirt on a regular basis because it’s one of his favorites!
