“Everything was better than we could have ever imagined!”
In February of 2013, 17-year-old Haylee went in for a routine dental procedure to remove her wisdom teeth. The next day it was clear she wasn’t recovering as planned; her face was extremely swollen, she was having difficulty breathing and began losing consciousness. The teen was immediately rushed to the hospital. After an emergency surgery and lab tests, Haylee was diagnosed with Ludwig Angina, a life-threatening skin infection that occurs on the floor of the mouth. This often leads to obstructed airways and narrowing or closing of airway passages. After 21 days in the ICU, countless rounds of antibiotics and six total surgeries, including a tracheotomy, Haylee was finally released from the hospital.
Despite her serious diagnosis, the outgoing teen didn’t let it damper her spirits on her recent wish trip to the tropical paradise of Hawaii. Haylee is passionate about experiencing other cultures and couldn’t wait to explore all the islands have to offer. The Iowa teen stayed at the beautiful Sheraton Waikiki resort, toured historic Pearl Harbor, learned to hula dance, and swam with sea turtles.
“Everything was better than we could have ever imagined,” recalls mom Tiffany.
Haylee is currently in good health but remains on daily medication. Every day she’s not in the hospital is a good day.
