Kids Wish Network Grants Wishes to Local Siblings with Blood Disorder

DISTRICT HEIGHTS, Md. – International children’s charity Kids Wish Network granted the shopping spree wish of District Heights teen William Coffey, who is suffering from a blood disorder that also affects his three sisters. Kids Wish Network is an international charitable organization dedicated to infusing hope, creating happy memories, and improving the quality of life for children having experienced life-altering situations.

“Granting a child’s wish provides them with more than just joy,” said Kids Wish Network Executive Director Anna Lanzatella. “It also gives them hope for a happier, healthier future.”

William Coffey is one of four siblings who were born with sickle cell disease, a condition that causes irregularly shaped blood cells and creates extreme episodes of pain. He suffers from severe hip and joint pain and also has a condition called avascular necrosis, which causes bone death due to poor blood circulation. With all of this, William will eventually develop arthritis and may need a hip replacement in the future.

William’s mother, Nataya Coffey, first heard about Kids Wish Network from a social worker at the Children’s National Medical Center in Washington D.C. Nataya contacted the charity and they soon approved wishes for her three youngest children: 15-year-old William, 13-year-old Chloe, and 7-year-old Amia.  Amia asked for a shopping spree to her local Toys “R” US; Chloe wanted to meet her favorite singing group, Mindless Behavior; and William wanted a shopping spree at the Westfield Annapolis Mall.

After Amia’s wish was granted and Chloe’s wish was in the planning stage, Kids Wish Network worked with the Westfield Annapolis Mall and William’s favorite stores to ensure a spectacular wish experience for the teen.

“This was everything he wanted,” said Nataya of her son’s wish. “It was really, really beautiful and we had an awesome time. It was so overwhelming how much everyone did for him.”

In addition to a $250 mall gift card, William was given a free eye exam and glasses from Lens Crafters, a gift card and goody bag from Tilly’s, a free pair of shoes from Finish Line, a $500 gift card from DTLR, gifts from Journeys, lunch at the Four Seasons Grill, and 3 movie passes from Bow Tie Cinema. William was also treated to special surprises such as welcome signs, his favorite song playing as he entered DTLR, and VIP treatment everywhere he went.

“William was just smiling the whole time,” said Nataya. “It was surreal for him. He could hardly believe it all. When you see the joy on your kids’ face, it overwhelms you. I was so touched. If anybody’s child has an opportunity to have a wish granted from Kids Wish Network, they should definitely take it.”

Kids Wish Network would like to thank the following for making William’s wish so spectacular: Westfield Annapolis Mall, Lens Crafters, Buckle, Tilly’s, Finish Line, DTLR, Journeys, Four Seasons Grill, and Bow Tie Cinema.
