“I HAVEN’T SEEN ALYSSA THIS HAPPY IN SUCH A LONG TIME”
In 2012, Alyssa noticed a strange lump on her neck. Her father immediately took her to the doctor, where tests revealed that she had Stage 2A Hodgkin’s Lymphoma, a cancer of the lymph nodes; she was started on aggressive chemotherapy within the week. Alyssa had been in and out of the hospital for six cycles of chemotherapy and, because the treatment weakened her immune system, she spent an extra nine days in the hospital battling a serious virus. Alyssa did a total of eight cycles of chemotherapy before starting radiation treatment.
Kids Wish Network arranged for Alyssa and her family to take a Carnival cruise that departed from Cape Canaveral and traveled to the Bahamas. During the cruise, Alyssa and her family were treated to multiple complimentary adventures including private dance lessons, a day at the spa and a tour of the galley with the head chef of the cruise ship.
“Alyssa smiled from ear to ear the entire time. Everyone treated us like gold, the trip was really awesome! I haven’t seen Alyssa this happy in such a long time, I can’t thank Kids Wish Network enough” said Alyssa’s father, Robert Korpi.
In Nassau, Alyssa really enjoyed swimming with the dolphins. “I couldn’t believe that I had my own dolphin to swim with as well as my own personal trainer. It was so magical! I also loved parasailing, it was awesome! I’m so grateful to everyone who made all of this possible.” added Alyssa.
Alyssa has been doing great over the past year. She is healthy and finished her first year of college. This summer, she traveled to Honduras where she volunteered and helped the community build an elementary school. She is planning to return to the country next summer as well.
