Before she turned four, Megan was diagnosed with a rare metabolic disease called cystinosis. This condition causes an amino acid called cystine to build up in the body. The cystine crystallizes and gathers in the kidneys, eyes, liver, muscles, pancreas, brain and white blood cells, causing kidney failure. Because of this condition, both of Megan’s kidneys were removed and she was placed on dialysis before undergoing a kidney transplant. Unfortunately, because of the aggressive nature of this disease, Megan may need another kidney transplant in the future. She currently takes medications every six hours and her condition is closely monitored.
For her wish, Megan got to enjoy the freedom of riding out into the wilds of Jackson, Wyoming on horseback every day during her stay at the R Lazy S Ranch. According to her mom, Megan was really in her element. She enjoyed games on horseback, tubing on Jackson Lake, leisurely day-long trail rides and so much more that she will never forget. Now that she’s home, Megan can’t wait to get a Western style saddle for her horse and expand on all the riding she learned out at the dude ranch.
