When he was just 2-years-old, Mark was diagnosed with having an inflammatory condition of the esophagus called eosinophilic esophagitis. This condition causes his esophagus to close up, making it difficult to swallow. Recently, this condition has worsened, forcing Mark’s family to give up their pets, keep Mark on a restrictive diet and remove the carpet from his room.
At the age of 4, he was diagnosed with having type I diabetes – a condition that has caused him to recently suffer a seizure. And, when he was 7-years-old, he developed a type of fungal sinusitis which required 5 surgeries to remove all of the polyps that grow in his sinuses; Mark will continue to need these surgeries as he grows.
Mark asked if he could visit LEGOland in California with his family and he had a wonderful time! There wasn’t a thing that Mark didn’t enjoy, but he especially loved seeing dolphins and whales during a whale watching cruise and riding the Simpsons ride (four times) at Universal Studios Hollywood. However, as much as he enjoyed everything he experienced, Mark’s favorite was definitely when he was surprised with a behind-the-scenes tour of LEGOland.
While on the tour, Mark and his sister got to see how the amazing LEGO figures were built from idea to actual model and they even got to make and keep their own LEGO models! It was truly a fantastic experience for the young LEGO fan.
“It’s been a tough past year-and-a-half for all of us, especially Mark,” said his mom. “So this was just wonderful. Thank you for this.”
