Steven is a 5-year-old little boy who was admitted to our hospital because he was bit by his own dog. As Steven was petting his dog and giving him some attention, his dog bit him, leaving him with lacerations on his head and a swollen eye. Steven came to our emergency room where he received several stitches on his head, and was later readmitted due to his eye becoming so swollen that it would not even open anymore. While in our hospital, Steven hugged his dolphin whose name was also “Steven,” and had to receive treatments to both the stitches on his head and his swollen eye. While Steven was hospitalized, he was always so calm and cheerful, and did everything that he needed to do to heal from his dog bite. He was extremely compliant and when the nurses would ask him if what they were doing was hurting him, he always said “no” even though they knew it did hurt. Steven was always so positive and gave out his “star” stickers from his coping kit as his way of telling the staff and others thank you for taking care of him. Though Steven went through a traumatic ordeal with his dog (which, by the way, his parents got rid of the dog the minute it happened), he showed a lot of courage by doing what he needed to do to help him get better, even if it hurt. Steven is definitely our Hero!
