Emma was injured in a firework accident in her home. The incident caused extensive injuries and burns to her legs, chest and hands. Emma was flown by helicopter to Children’s Mercy Hospital where she was immediately operated on and stabilized in the PICU. Emma had reconstructive surgery on her hands and an external fixator placed to replace her leg. Emma remained in the PICU for approximately two weeks where she received daily dressing changes and wound care for her multiple injuries.
She was then transferred to the burn unit where she has remained for months. During much of her time in the burn unit, Emma endured daily dressing treatments and wound vac changes until her skin graft surgery. In rehab services, she participates with multiple intensive therapies. Emma continues to amaze her family and staff during her speedy recovery. During this time, she has regained her sense of humor and determination. This eleven-year-old loves to go-kart race and has entertained many staff members with her racing skills and stories!
Her spirit has remained intact despite enduring such a horrific event and the painful and draining therapies she has undergone on this road to recovery. Emma is an amazing young girl who has overcome amazing odds and continues to show perseverance and determination as she finishes yet another race!
