Kids Wish Network grants wish to youth with life-threatening illness

PATERSON, N.J. – T’Shayla is a happy, outgoing teenager who is living with life-threatening conditions known as ulcerative colitis and sclerosing choloangitis. She has an abnormally functioning liver and oftentimes is in severe pain. Her conditions cause various complications for T’Shayla and require her to be on several medications and be monitored closely.

When a child life specialist at St. Josephs Children’s Hospital in Paterson told T’Shayla’s mother about Kids Wish Network and the possibility of getting a wish granted for her daughter, T’Shayla’s mother, Tangy, decided to fill out the application.

“We kept it a secret from T’Shayla. She didn’t find out about it until we knew she had been approved for her wish,” Tangy said.

When T’Shayla’s Kids Wish Network wish coordinator called and asked T’Shayla what she wanted for her one and only wish, she said she wanted to take a family vacation to the Florida theme parks.

“She likes family oriented places and for all of us to spend time together,” Tangy said. “She had never been to Florida before either.”

Kids Wish Network arranged the trip for T’Shayla and her family. Round-trip flights, accommodations at the luxurious Royal Plaza Hotel, theme park tickets, meals, attractions and spending money were given to the family. Kids Wish Network also gave T’Shayla a huge gift box filled with special gifts.

“Everything was great. It was a lot of good stuff,” Tangy said.

While T’Shayla enjoyed the rides at Busch Gardens-Tampa Bay, the “Lion King” show at Disney’s Animal Kingdom and the Pirates Dinner Adventure, her favorite part of the whole experience was being with her family.

“Basically, everybody being together was my favorite part,” she said.

Tangy said the trip was great and it was something she would not have been able to do anytime soon.

“It was a very good experience and I feel really blessed to have been able to participate. I don’t know when we would have been able to go on a trip like this without Kids Wish Network,” she said.
