Melissa is a twelve year old girl admitted for a ruptured appendix. She has been hospitalized for over two weeks and unfortunately has had multiple procedures while staying at North Shore University Hospital. She had multiple drains that are uncomfortable and painful but she does not complain. During her stay she has been in touch with school and you can find her working on her homework so she does not get behind the class even when she was not feeling that well. She does very well in school and is in the top of her class. She maintains a positive outlook, keeps smiling, and has a pleasant demeanor with staff. Melissa’s family is very supportive of her. Melissa enjoys participating in arts and crafts including; sand art, making lanyards, and molding with Model Magic. We believe Melissa is our Hero of the Month due to her optimism and drive to get past her hospitalization and have a speedy recovery so she can get back to her daily routine.
