Kate is a 17 y/o that had a badly ruptured appendix. She came in through the Emergency Room and had surgery early on the next morning. Kate had to have an NG tube placed the day after surgery due to frequent vomiting. Even though she wasn’t feeling well, she started walking the day following surgery. She has not complained once while she was here about having to walk, having to use her incentive Spiro meter, or not being able to eat. Kate has been extremely friendly and cooperative with staff and has had the “I can do it” attitude throughout her entire hospitalization. She is not the type to sit around in bed. She frequently spends her time outside of her room in the hallways, gift shop, or cafeteria. She was hoping to be able to go home after a week of being hospitalized but found out she has developed abscesses and will have to stay a few days longer. Though Kate was extremely disappointed to learn she would not be able to go home, she has kept a smile on her face. Kate is a great kid that has taken her illness with stride which is why she is our Hero of the Month!
