Grace suffered 3rd degree burns to over 75% of her body and lost all of the fingers on both of her hands when she was trapped in a house fire. Since that time, she has undergone many surgeries, has endured painful dressing changes and has to accept wearing uncomfortable compression garments and a tight-fitting mask. All this time the hospital has been Grace’s home, removing her from the support of her family and the pleasures of being active in the community.
Despite these challenges, Grace has demonstrated an indomitable spirit. She insists on independence and refuses to be excluded by her injuries. She participates in self-care and therapies daily. Grace has even made her least favorite treatments (wearing her arm splint and face mask) part of her normal routine. Her heroic spirit is an inspiration to staff and residents alike.
