In September 2009 Alfonzo was burned in a house fire. He bravely was pulled from his bedroom by his step-father and sustained 2nd and 3rd degree burns. He knew to go to the window of his room and from there was rescued. Alfonzo spent time in the PICU and then on a regular children’s unit for several weeks.
AJ, as he likes to be called, is a clear example of a hero. Despite his painful treatments, he maintained a positive attitude and learned ways to cope with his dressing changes, including singing Michael Jackson songs during wound care. Also, his ability to see the positive helped his parents remain strong during this emotional time. Despite the loss of their home and belongings, AJ demonstrated how life continues to move along.
