There was a very special event at Kids Wish Network this week. The wish department had a special shindig for Madeline Robinson, our Program Services Manager. Why, you ask? Because it was her birthday, of course! (Actually, it wasn’t her birthday yet; she won’t be here on her birthday because she is headed out on a Michael J. Fox wish.)
We were feeling like having a true fiesta, so we ordered from a Mexican restaurant that is located near the Kids Wish Network national headquarters in Holiday, Fla. It was delish! After lunch and a semi-out-of-key round of Happy Birthday, we had Carvel ice cream cake. I am leaving the amount of slices I consumed out of this. It’s not important. What is important, however, is the song that was stuck in my head the whole time I ate it: “ice cream and cake and cake! Ice cream and cake and cake! Ice cream and cake do the ice cream and cake! Ice cream and cake do the ice cream and cake!” (In case you are like ALL of my fellow Kids Wish Network employees and haven’t seen the Carvel ice cream cake commercial I am alluding to, you should look it up online. It’s sure to be a classic.)
Looking back on the event, I am regretting each and every bite I took. Not that I didn’t enjoy the food; it’s just that I enjoyed it so much that I ate too much and now I feel sick. Yes, sick. I went from happily singing the Carvel ice cream cake song to happily wishing I’d never heard of it – the song or the cake – before. Why do I do this to myself?
Although we work hard at Kids Wish Network, we like to have fun, too. And we (and our HR department) like to take care of one another for our birthdays. Here’s to you, Mrs. Robinson! Hope your birthday was – and is – a blast!
