The Beautiful Relationship between Kids and Reading

It’s no secret that I love to read. Ask anyone here and they’ll tell you that I carry a book to lunch with me every day. In fact, I’m trying to read two books right now: one while I’m here at work and one when I’m home. 🙂 I am proud to say that I picked this habit (of reading…not just reading two books at once) up when I was very young. My mother read stories to me at bedtime and I just loved everything about it. By the time I made it to Kindergarten I was a reading fiend. You literally had to hold me back when it came to going to the library; since then nothing has changed. If anything, my love of reading has grown with me.

Since I’ve grown up, I’ve seen that a healthy love of reading can boost a child’s feeling of self, promote learning, encourage imaginative thinking and do many, many more wonderful things for a child’s well-being. In the second grade class that my mother teaches, I’ve seen a good book change a child’s outlook on learning in one day: a child who was completely uninterested in learning and participating in lessons absolutely loved dinosaurs. Though the child did not want to read books on dinosaurs, he looked at the pictures. My mother showed him all sorts of dinosaur books, just hoping that one would spark his interest in the words around the pictures and, luckily, one did. After that one book, the child’s curiosity was sparked and my mother saw him reading some of the other dinosaur books in her classroom library. She asked him questions to see if he was actually reading and he could tell her all about what the different dinosaurs ate and what environments they lived in, etc., which is something he could not do before he actually began reading the books. It was astonishing!

With such a love of and respect for books and reading, I was absolutely THRILLED beyond belief when I found out that one of my all-time favorite stores, Borders, was hosting a book and toy drive for the kids served by Kids Wish Network! Until May 1st, four Borders locations here in Florida have decided to give the donations provided by their customers to Kids Wish Network to distribute to kids across the country! What an opportunity! I heard from our Distribution Department last week that they just received their first shipment of donations from this toy drive and they were so excited that you could feel it in the air!

Here are the locations that are helping out “our” kids:

Carrollwood – Borders
12500 N. Dale Mabry
Tampa, FL 33618

Brandon – Borders
2020 Town Center Blvd.
Brandon, FL 33511

South Tampa – Borders
909 N. Dale Mabry
Tampa, FL 33609

Clearwater – Borders
2683 Gulf to Bay Blvd.
Clearwater, FL 33759

So, if you’re here in Florida and you’re anywhere near any of these four locations, please stop by and donate a book to a child. That one book could change a child’s life for the better.
