Sarah is a very brave 10 year old girl who was struck by a car and suffered a major head injury as well as a broken leg. For a week and a half, she was intubated in our PICU and required close monitoring of the fluid around her brain. Her family has been a strong presence and, even during intubation, found a touching way to communicate with their daughter through music which encouraged Sarah to squeeze her mother’s hand for the first time. They have remained positive while encouraging Sarah throughout her recovery.
Sarah was finally extubated after regaining the ability to breathe on her own. She has just begun her long road of physical and emotional recovery while working through the hardships of re-learning the tasks of her daily life. We look forward to engaging Sarah in therapeutic activities as she becomes more able, but it is already obvious what a sweet spirit this young girl has.
