Otto was one of our youngest trauma patients admitted to California Hospital Medical Center. Every day for school, Otto (by himself) needs to take the regular community bus, and then has to transfer to the school bus just so he can get to school. On his way home from school, Otto was assaulted by a group of guys and consequently suffered from a blunt head trauma. Otto was initially admitted into the Trauma Intensive Care Unit and after being extubated was transferred to our Pediatric Unit. While in the hospital, Otto was always so pleasant and kind, and so appreciative of the care he was receiving. Although he had to be by himself in the hospital at times, his manners and respect for the staff never ceased – he always said “thank you” no matter what was done and even wrote “thank you cards” to the hospital staff. Otto showed maturity in calling the hospital staff “nice, elegant and loving people.” Otto was extremely compliant and patient with all that he had to endure. What truly makes Otto a hero is that despite what happened to him, he had the courage to continue to ride the buses to and from school – but just decided to take a different route.
