Makayla is a typical 15 year old who loves games, crafts, movies and hanging out with family and friends. She is a very active but quiet teen. Makayla had an extended hospitalization and multiple stays due to complications from gastrointestinal issues. Her initial stay and diagnosis a few years ago was duodenal atresia. There have been issues with her small intestines since birth, and due to repeated tests and surgeries, scar tissue has developed inside the intestines. The scar tissue and webbing cause obstruction issues, pain and issues with food and diet. She has experienced a history of recurrent episodes of nausea, diarrhea, pain and trouble with weight gain. Due to her illness, she has missed a lot of school. Through it all, she has kept her head up and tried to remain positive but has been discouraged during this experience and the many set back and complications she has faced during her recovery. Makayla is very compliant with doctors orders and deserves this award after everything she has gone through!
