Jakob is an amazing kid. He was born at 24 weeks gestation and experienced multiple complications that go wrong with being a preemie, including ventricular bleeds and hydrocephalus. Jakob received his first shunt at five months of age and has experienced 32 surgeries since to help his shunt function correctly. He now suffers from Slit Ventricle Syndrome which is difficult to manage.
Despite being nauseated and sensitive to light when arriving from surgery, he is always polite and pleasant to the nurses. You can usually coax a smile from him even if he is feeling badly. Unfortunately for Jakob, time between hospital visits is sometime short. He always keeps a positive attitude when it comes to his recovery and hopefully this last surgery, the shunt will function correctly and allow Jakob the ability to enjoy life!
