Tony is a 14 year old male who was diagnosed with familial adenomatous polyposis at the age of 11 via genetic testing. He has been fortunate in that over the past several yeas he has had no major issues caused by this diagnosis. Recently the doctors decided to do surgical intervention to prevent Tony from developing the colon cancer which killed his father at the age of 29. On February 16th, Tony underwent a 16 hour surgery which included a total proctocolectomy, rectal mucosectomy and a ileal pouch anastomosis. After spending the night in the intensive care unit, He returned back to the surgical unit. Tony has done amazingly with the recovery process. Within days, he was walking around and in the playroom. Tony has kept a positive attitude and has received a great deal of support from his mother and brother. He is a Hero due to his positive attitude and being strong throughout this recovery.
