In spite of everything Alejandro has gone through, he always remained happy and in high spirits. When Alex was eight years old, he was diagnosed with Asthma and GERD. To treat his GERD, Alex underwent a surgery called fundoplication. He had an additional two surgeries to adjust the fundoplication. Because of his multiple surgeries, he had nerve damage in his abdomen which caused constant pain. He had numerous doctor visits and scans but the cause of the pain was never determined. Finally he was referred to UCLA where he was diagnosed with Fibromyalgia, which is long term, body-wide pain and tender points in joints, muscles, tendons and other soft tissues. He is currently under a pain management program, acupuncture and multiple medications. He has been dealing with this for over 5 years but it has not slowed him down. He really wants to be able to go back to school and be a normal kid but he has learned to accept it and carry on with his everyday life. Through it all, he has been a real Hero!
