State: North Carolina
Facility: Presbyterian Hemby
We have chosen Veda as Presbyterian’s Hero of the Month for September. Veda is a 7 year old girl who was admitted September 6th for abdominal pain and vomiting. This is her fifth admission since July, 2007. She was originally diagnosed with intestinal blockage. Prior to her first hospitalization, Veda has been healthy and independent. However, over the past couple of months, her functioning has been compromised due to pain. She has spent most of her hospital stay in her room. She currently has a nasogastric tube in her nose to help suction excess fluid from her abdominal area. Her condition is improving and she has been talking more. Since she has been hospitalized, her diaphragm has weakened. We have been blowing bubbles with her to strengthen her lung capacity. She also completes daily physical therapy exercises with the assistance of her mom. Veda has made great progress despite the many setbacks she has endured.
