We here at Schneider Children’s Hospital, Pediatric Emergency Department want to nominate Tyler for hero of the month for February, 2008. Tyler, an 8 year old boy, presented to the emergency department for extreme dehydration. He had been vomiting and had diarrhea for many days. He was extremely frightened because he had surgery not too long ago and was fearful of the hospital environment. An IV needed to be inserted in his arm and with the help of his mom who was very supportive and the child life specialist providing cooping techniques the nurse was able to do this procedure without putting him in a papoose. He was very brave as he practiced his breathing technique with his mom so that his anxiety level was substantially reduced. He was so weak and frightened but as time went by and he received fluid he began to improve.
