Shawn – Hero of the Month

Name: Shawn
Age: 17
State: Minneapolis, MN
Facility: Shriners Hospitals for Children – Minneapolis

Hero of the Month Boy

Without hesitation, Shawn’s Child Life Specialist thinks he is one of the greatest kids she has ever known! She met him years ago, during his first admission to Shriners Hospitals for Children – Minneapolis/Twin Cities.

Strep throat quickly developed into an infection that entered his bloodstream and caused multi-system organ failure. His feet and fingers actually begin to “die” and turned black. In addition to his lower legs, he also lost some fingers and the tips of several others. He learned to walk again after being fitted with prosthetic legs and upon receiving that first set, never let his amputations stop him.

A member of his high school’s varsity football team, Shawn has broken several prosthetic feet during workouts. His positive attitude is contagious and inspirational. He enjoys being amongst his friends and teammates and volunteers all the time during practice.

He is a very hard worker and exemplifies unbelievable determination, despite his titanium ankles, fiberglass and carbon fiber shins and carbon fiber feet. On the academic side, Shawn is a great student and is looking forward to attending college. This is one HERO who has come very far with the very best attitude!
