Facility: Kapi’olani Medical Center
Kapi’olani Medical Center for Women and Children would like to nominate Nicole to be our October 2007 Hero of the Month. Nicole is an 11 year old girl who was admitted to our hospital on 09/28/07 with second degree bums to the perineum – ant/post upper leg areas and buttock after spilling hot soup on herself 2 days prior. When I first met Nicole the only comfortable position she had was the straddle position, on all fours, with much pressure being placed on both arms and knees. Since undergoing surgery for further debridement and wound care management she is feeling much better and able to lie on her back with minima] discomfort. She is working hard with PT to increase her ROM, ability to ambulate, and participate in activities of normal daily living. She is still unable to tolerate sitting at this time due to pain but with practice (ambulating 3-4x’s a day) and commitment to healing and getting better Nicole is on her way to being discharged. Nicole continues to work toward the challenges and fears of hot liquids post event but has been open with her feelings, needs, and concerns with caregivers and hospital staff. Nicole has a large extended family who have been keeping her company and raising her spirits each day she remains hospitalized. She always welcomes visitors to her room with a SMILE!
