During his short life, Jake has witnessed domestic violence in his own home. In addition, he has experienced multiple medical problems including skull fractures and was in a coma.
Jake and his family came to the United States less than a year ago. Upon their arrival to America, Jake and his sibling were exposed to – and experienced – violence at the hands of their father. He always wanted to protect his mother and during the last incident of violence, he was brave enough to alert another adult in the home to call the police. In addition, Jake fractured his skull in multiple places when he was three years old, after he fell out of his bunk bed. Since this accident, most of the fractures have healed. A year later, he came in contact with bacteria, resulting in 6 days in a coma. Through all of this, Jake is a healthy boy who is always smiling and laughing. He is a true survivor who deserves to be recognized and honored as a HERO!
