Isaiah’s parents knew of his cleft lip and palate in an ultrasound completed at 20 weeks during his mother’s pregnancy. When Isaiah was 4 months old, he underwent his first surgery to repair his cleft lip and nose. At one year of age, he had a partial cleft repair. A total cleft repair was completed in April 2009. In addition, Isaiah has hearing impairments, which have also affected his speech acquisition. Four sets of tubes were inserted in his ears to crease his hearing acuity. Isaiah received three years of speech therapy in a walk-in school clinic and pre-school due to articulation delays. He began receiving outpatient speech therapy services twice a week at Cherry Tree Rehab Pediatric Specialty Therapy beginning last October. Through his hard work and motivation, Isaiah’s speech has improved tremendously. He continues to work hard improving his speech. Despite the hardships that he and his parents have undergone in the five years of his life, Isaiah and his family maintain a positive outlook on life. This continued attitude, hard work and dedication is the reason Isaiah is a HERO!
