Name: Ana Leeza
Facility: Driscoll Children’s Hospital
Ana is a 7-year-old child who was involved in a motor vehicle accident with her family in April. Ana suffered multiple injuries including a closed head injury, a cervical spine injury, a broken femur, broken mandible and many facial lacerations. The nature of her injuries required her to have a halo device placed around her head to stabilize her neck and limit her mobility as well as have her jaw wired shut so it could heal. Her airway was also compromised so she received a tracheostomy to open her airway. Besides her own injuries, both Ana’s mother and father were injured in the accident and were hospitalized in other hospitals. She went over a month without seeing both parents and was given care by her grandmother while in our hospital. During Ana’s two month inpatient stay, she constantly provided a positive outlook on the situation and used her humor and wit to make everyone feel at ease. We were amazed to be helping such a young lady who was wise byond her years and so motivated to get better. Ana had many qualities that a Hero must possess such as bravery, courage, strength, faith, hope and love. Her positive spirit was always such a joy to be around; all the staff who worked with her during her stay felt that she was a true Hero!
