In March of 2006, Tyson was diagnosed with a condition known as limb girdle muscular dystrophy. LGMD primarily affects the muscles around the legs, arms and hips. Over a period of time, those who suffer with LGMD lose muscle mass and strength. Tyson is experiencing increasing difficulty with his mobility and at times must use a wheelchair. He also experiences a great deal of pain.
Tyson is a huge NASCAR fan and never misses the chance to watch a race on television and cheer on his all-time favorite racer, Kevin Harvick! When Tyson found out he had been approved for a wish, he knew just what he wanted to do: he wanted to meet the racing legend in person. Tyson flew out to Los Angeles to watch Kevin race at the California Speedway. Even better than watching the race, however, was meeting his hero. Tyson, who used to race go karts before he was diagnosed with MD, presented Kevin with a card he had made up with pictures of his go kart, which was even painted red and yellow, and numbered 29, just like Kevin’s!
