In March of 2008, Tom was diagnosed with osteosarcoma, which is an aggressively progressive cancer of the bone. This malignant tissue tumor presents as tumoral bone and is usually localized around the ends of the long bones. Since his diagnosis, Tom suffered through aggressive chemotherapy treatments. Due to his condition he had to have his right leg amputated above the knee.
Tom’s number one wish was to go on a deep sea fishing trip in the Florida Keys. With less than a week notice, Captain Jimmie Gagliardini of High Caliber Sport Fishing Charters and Captain Dan Duimstra of Shark River Charters both agreed to take Tom and his family on two offshore fishing trips, where the fishing was fun and Tom had a fantastic time. The Ocean Reef Club of Key Largo arranged for his hotel stay and many local restaurants provided wonderful dinners for the family.
Sadly, Tom passed away at the end of January. Having bravely fought against the cancer that claimed his life, Tom can finally rest and his family has a bundle of new memories to remember their wonderful son.
