National charity grants wish for local teen

BOYNE FALLS, Mich. – A teenager battling various life-threatening illnesses was granted a wish for a gaming laptop with the help of national charity Kids Wish Network.

Dalton is a happy 13-year-old boy who loves playing video games. But when he isn’t fighting to beat his favorite game, he is fighting for his life. At 20-months-old, Dalton was diagnosed with a series of illnesses. His conditions include persistent severe asthma, obstructive sleep apnea, severe sinusitis and severe allergies.

Dalton’s asthma is so severe that most of the time when he breathes out, he is not able to get breath back into his lungs. He takes steroids to help control his asthma, and the steroids have caused various side effects including high blood pressure, depression and weight gain. He suffers from over 100 allergies and is monitored while he sleeps due to his sleep apnea.

While at home one day, Dalton’s mother Kristine received a phone call from Kids Wish Network and was informed that her son had been referred to possibly receive a wish. A wish application was sent to their home, and before she knew it, she was telling Dalton that he would be receiving a wish.

“I waited to tell him that he would be getting a wish until after a letter came letting me know that he qualified,” Kristine said. “I didn’t want to get his hopes us just in case.”

Wish coordinator Vanessa was assigned to help grant Dalton’s wish and with the help of wish funding specialist Megan and some local sponsors, Dalton’s wish for an Alienware gaming laptop came true.

Kristine said that there were a few factors that contributed to Dalton choosing a gaming laptop for his wish.

“Well, physically he can’t keep up with other kids and he loves gaming,” she said. “And his other computer crashed and Dalton is home schooled and wasn’t able to do his work.”

Kristine said that Dalton was so happy when he found out he was getting his wish. She said he was very pleased with his choice.

“He was really surprised when the box came,” she said. “And it came earlier than we expected, too.”

As his mother, Kristine said the best part of this whole experience was that she was able to see her son’s wish come true. And it taught her family a lesson as well.

“I think it taught us all a little patience,” she said.

Kids Wish Network would like to thank the following for helping to make Dalton’s wish extra special: Boyne City Eagles Aerie #1583, Smith-Hover American Legion Post #281, and American Legion Post #159 Mackinaw City
