Mikaela has a metabolic disorder known as cystinosis. Cystinosis is characterized by an abnormal accumulation of amino acid cystine in various organs of the body including the kidneys, muscles, eyes, pancreas and brain. Many children with cystinosis experience kidney failure. Mikaela’s own kidneys are not functioning properly and she requires frequent medical supervision and many different medications. In addition, Mikaela had surgery to straighten her legs and she must use a walker for mobility.

Mikaela had a blast on her exciting shopping day; not only did she pick up a new doll, she also picked out some special outfits and accessories for her very favorite ones at home!
