State: Portland, ME
Facility: Barbara Bush Children’s Hospital at Maine Medical Center
Michael came to the hospital with pneumonia and soon developed HUS, sepsis, renal failure, liver failure, and anemia. He needed dialysis and extra pints of blood. He had surgery on his left lung to remove the pneumonia that wasn’t responding to the antibiotics. His chances for survival were grim, but he pulled through – bringing much needed sunshine back to his parents! He was courageous and polite throughout the entire month-long ordeal.
