State: Brooklyn, NY
Facility: Maimonides Medical Center
12-year old Maia was admitted to Maimonides Medical Center’s PICU for a slowly debilitating illness – Guillian-Barre Syndrome – which affects the peripheral nervous system. She is unable to move both her lower and upper extremities and can only communicate by nodding her head. Prior to her diagnosis, Maia was a normal functioning twelve-year old girl. She has experienced a very difficult time since arriving at the hospital. She is frustrated by the fact that she can no longer freely express her thoughts & feelings with/to her family and friends, though she received a tremendous amount of support from them. Once Maia has finished her treatment at Maimonides, she will then undergo intense physical rehabilitation to gain her motor skills back.
