Devin was diagnosed with sickle cell anemia at birth. This is a disorder of the hemoglobin protein, which transfers oxygen to the body’s cells. This abnormal hemoglobin causes red blood cells to form in crescent shapes, which are fragile and easily ruptured. Devin suffers extreme pain crises frequently and is often taken out of school because of them; she has a tutor at school in order to keep her up-to-date on her studies. Just a year ago, Devin suffered a silent stroke and every three weeks for the rest of her life, she must endure a blood transfusion to help prevent another stroke. Devin is in and out of the hospital frequently and is on a daily pain medication regimen to help her manage the pain.
Devin had a truly magical time in Florida, where she got to visit the entire Walt Disney World Resort! She really had a blast! We’re so happy you had so much fun, Devin!
