Desteny was the typical 7 year old kid, running, playing and swimming. One day, she started to feel pain and numbness in her legs. Desteny’s mom took her to the doctor where she was then admitted to the hospital. During her admission, she was unexpectedly diagnosed with transverse myelitis, which is a neurological disorder of the spine caused by inflammation across the spinal cord. Desteny lost feeling and function below her waist, including her legs, bowel and bladder. She worked extremely hard in her daily therapies and had to learn how to perform activities of daily living in a wheelchair. Desteny’s confidence and comfort level in the hospital grew over her hospitalization. She was independently zipping around the floor in her wheelchair prior to discharge. It is currently unknown if Desteny will regain feeling and/or function in her legs, until then, she will continue using a wheelchair for mobility.
