Damien is a delightful 17 year old boy who has been hospitalized for almost a month. He sustained a football injury resulting in his spleen rupturing. After several days, it was determined that a spleenectomy was needed. Damien was on bed rest for an extended period of time with an NG tube to suction. He then developed other symptoms necessitating the placement of a chest tube. He was moved back and forth from the PICU to the step down unit as necessary. He has not been mobile and ha been unable to eat for an extended period of time. Through it all, Damien has kept a positive attitude. His family, friends and football teammates have been a great support system for him. He is looking forward to a returning to his normal life, though his sports activities will be on hold for some time. Given his unexpected ordeal and his courage throughout, he can only be a called a true hero!
