CONROE, Texas – A teenager with a life-threatening illness gets the computer of his dreams with a little help from Kids Wish Network.
In 2008, Eric was diagnosed with Von Hippel-Lindau disease, a very rare and aggressive condition that causes rapid tumor growth. Soon after his diagnosis he had to have surgery to remove a tumor on his adrenal gland. He was hospitalized for 37 days. Eric now has a tumor behind each eye and is totally blind in his right eye and experiencing severe headaches. Eric will soon have to have another surgery to remove this tumor. To monitor his condition, Eric’s doctors have him in for MRIs and EKGs frequently.
A regular donor to children’s charity Kids Wish Network, Eric’s mother, Judy, told a professional fundraiser that her son had just been diagnosed with cancer. The caller gave Judy all the information she needed and soon she was in contact with a Kids Wish Network Wish Coordinator named Jill.
Jill was the one to whom Eric confided his one wish: to have a laptop of his very own.
With the help of some outstanding local sponsors, Jill arranged to have Eric picked up in a limousine and driven to his local Best Buy, where he picked up his new computer. After receiving his new computer, Eric was even driven to dinner where he was celebrated like the hero he is.
The laptop itself was just perfect for the teen and it was also equipped with anti-virus software and a printer. Jill even had an internet connection set up for Eric through Academic Planet! It was all that Eric had dreamed of and more.
“Eric just had a wonderful time,” said Judy of her son’s wish. “Every day he goes straight into his room to get on it! He’s been happy ever since…I’m just so happy that Eric’s happy!”
Though he hasn’t had the computer for long, Eric’s already got the hang of it and he is simply enthralled with having his own personal laptop. In fact, it’s been quite an inspiration to him; since he got the computer, he’s been using it to begin writing a book.
“Every day he gets home,” says Judy, “he gets in and goes right to work on it [his story]. He just loves it. It [the computer] is like a gift from God that he’d never had before. Everybody who helped out [with the wish] did a wonderful job.”
For making Eric’s wish extra special, Kids Wish Network would like to thank the following: Best Buy Conroe, Margarita and Peppers, Montgomery County Limousine Service, Academic Planet and Taquito Enterprises, LLC.
