KETTERING, Ohio – A little boy with a life-threatening illness had the wish of his life with Kids Wish Network.
When a the child of a family friend had a wish granted through Kids Wish Network, they kept telling Tanya that she should do the same for her son. When she finally did so, it turned out to be one of the best things she has ever done for her little boy. Because of that one phone call, her son’s wish has finally come true.
At birth, Nicholas was diagnosed with cerebral palsy, which affects the body’s movement and muscle control. In addition, Nicholas was diagnosed with the seizure disorder, epilepsy, and has hydrocephalus. Because of these conditions, he has had a shunt placed within his skull, he is confined to a wheelchair and he must wear braces on his back, feet and hands.
It was Kids Wish Network’s Wish Coordinator, Jill, who found out that Nick’s fondest wish was to visit Orlando, Florida to meet all of his favorite Disney and Sesame Street characters. With the help of Wish Funding Specialist, Donna, and some fantastic sponsors, Nicholas’ wish came true to the fullest.
Once in Florida, every day was a new adventure for Nick and his family. Jill made sure that everything was lined up and ready for them when they arrived; even the dinners and hotel stays were organized! “It was super-fun,” said Tanya, “everything was so organized…Jill even printed out maps to make sure we wouldn’t get lost! She did such a great job.”
Nick had the chance to visit SeaWorld, Disney’s Hollywood Studios and Magic Kingdom with his family. He had a blast at the Magic Kingdom, where he met all of his favorite Disney characters including Buzz, Woody, Lightning McQueen, Tow Mater and Tinkerbell! Seeing them all in person made them all very real for Nick, which delighted and excited him.
Though Nick was thrilled with the Toy Story Mania! ride at Disney’s Hollywood Studios, his favorite part of the whole trip was watching the live “Elmo and Abby’s Treasure Hunt” show. According to Tanya, this show alone made his trip. He simply couldn’t stop smiling.
Everywhere they went, Nick and his family were treated like celebrities. At Flippers Pizzeria and the Cheesecake Factory, the food was “phenomenal” and the staff was especially friendly and happy to have them there. Both the Royal Plaza Hotel in Orlando and the Columbus Marriott back in Ohio also rolled out the red carpet for the wish family. At the Marriott, Nick and his family were even treated to a pizza and movie night, courtesy of the hotel!
To sum up Nick’s wish trip, his mother, Tanya, said it best: “It was awesome!” There was nothing she would have changed and Nick enjoyed every second of his vacation; it was truly the wish of a lifetime.
Kids Wish Network would like to thank the following for helping to make Nick’s wish extra special: American Legion Post 598, VFW Post 3283, Compassion Partners, Pirates Dinner Adventure, Columbus Airport Marriott, Flippers Pizzeria, The Cheesecake Factory, Royal Plaza Hotel, Dollar Rent A Car and WonderWorks.
