Angleton, TX- A little boy with Duchenne muscular dystrophy gets his dream shopping spree, thanks to Kids Wish Network.
Sometimes happiness is just a click away and that’s the literal truth in the case of nine year old Christian. At the age of two, Christian was diagnosed with Duchenne muscular dystrophy. This is the most severe form of muscular dystrophy and is characterized by a rapid progression of muscular deterioration that starts in the legs and gradually affects the whole body. Just recently, Christian has started using a wheelchair for mobility at school due to the weakness in his leg muscles. His mother, Danielle, wanted desperately to give something back to her brave little boy, so she started searching on the internet for organizations that grant wishes to sick children. While surfing, she stumbled upon “the cutest little website” for Kids Wish Network, a charity that grants wishes to children with life threatening illnesses; she immediately gave them a call.
Not long after her initial call, Danielle was talking to her son’s new Wish Coordinator, Vanessa, about Christian’s number one wish. Given Christian’s love of video games, it wasn’t hard for him to choose what he wanted most of all: a shopping spree at Best Buy, where he could choose whatever technological toys that might strike his fancy. With the help of Wish Funding Specialist, Megan, who found some terrific sponsors, Vanessa set up the perfect shopping day at Christian’s local Best Buy, including lunch at Red Lobster and an extra surprise gift box filled to the brim with fun and games for Christian to enjoy.
When his big day arrived, Christian and his mother rushed to Best Buy hoping to get exactly what Christian wanted, including a Nintendo Wii system. Though there was a line outside of people waiting to get one of a limited number of Wii systems, Christian ended up getting one of the first! Once his shopping spree started, Christian didn’t stop. According to his mother, Danielle, Christian was “piled up to his neck with stuff” in the shopping cart. In the heap of games and gadgets surrounding Christian in the cart were his prized Wii, several games and controllers for it, a Nintendo DS system and games to accompany that as well! All in all, Christian was able to grab about a thousand dollars worth of gadgetry that he had been wanting for quite some time.
Since his shopping spree, Christian has barely stopped playing his new games. He’s especially fond of his handheld Nintendo DS and loves showing it off. On his new Wii system, his favorite is a Lego Star Wars game which is truly “his thing”, says his mother. Christian “really enjoyed it” and really got into the whole shopping thing when he was there. His mother couldn’t be more grateful. About Wish Coordinator, Vanessa, Christian’s mother, Danielle, said that she was too “good” to them and that Christian couldn’t have wanted anything more.
With a little help from Kids Wish Network, one little Texas boy had his gaming dreams come true and was given more memories to last a lifetime.
Kids Wish Network would like to thank the following for helping to make Christian’s wish extra special: Family Life Church, First United Methodist Church, Wal-Mart and Red Lobster.
